The importance of rest and recovery

IMG_1742

What happens when you become obsessed with exercising and forget the importance of rest and recovery? Rest days prevents overusing your muscles. If you push yourself too hard without a break, your muscles and joints suffer and increases the risk of injuries and other issues.

When you overexercise you can place too much stress on the body which can lead to injuries ie stress fractures, muscle fractures and joint pain and then put you out of exercising.

The body needs rest for it to get stronger and repair itself, this is where change occurs. You need to challenge the body through exercising, fuel it and then allow it to rest in order to get stronger.

Sleep is also an important part of the growth process. During REM sleep, your body’s production of growth hormone increases, which aids in the repairing and rebuilding of muscles post workout.
